After soloing my way to Inferno on my Monk, I have a lot of helpful information to share with other Monks who want to get to Inferno as fast as possible.

* Elective Mode

This guide was built using Elective Mode.  Meaning I had the ability to put whatever 6 skills up that I wanted from any tree.

To turn Elective Mode on go to Options -> Gameplay -> Interface and check the Elective Mode box.

This will allow you to put any 6 skills you want up making it easier to level to 60.

* Monk Tank or Monk DPS?

As you progress through the game you’re going to need to focus more on survivability and health regeneration.  But if you’re looking to go strictly damage or strictly Tank, there is no right answer.  Unless you’re going to focus on co-op you’ll be playing a bit of both depending on what you’re facing in game, especially in Inferno and in Hell.  Sometimes you can only beat bosses because of survivability no matter how much damage you do and other times damage is more important than survivability.  It will be situational and you’ll know which you need when the time comes.

* Dual Wield or 2H Weapon?

Basically, Dual Wielding is helpful in Tanking because you get a passive skill (The Guardian’s Path) that grants you 15% dodge while dual weilding and 25% more spirit regeneration with a 2 Hander.

This does not mean you have to tank if you dual wield or you can’t tank if you have a 2 hander, there’s so many configurations that would allow you to do anything no matter which you choose to do.

There is a huge benefit to leveling, especially in the earlier stages, while dual wielding because you can get a socket in each weapon.  I have been unable to find a 2h weapon with more than one socket.  That extra socket can be used to put an Amethyst in or 2 Amethysts which gives you life per hit which makes you survive a lot longer, this can also be useful in tanking.  Or you can put rubies in these slots and add weapon damage.

The other thing is, if you’re going to tank while duel wielding the bonus from your passive skill is a passive bonus.  Meaning you don’t have to do anything special to dodge attacks you just will.  On the other hand if you’re using a 2h Weapon you’ll get extra spirit which you can also use to tank by managing your skills that require spirit but you’ll have to be reactive and pay attention.

Whichever you decide to do is fine, but both weapons can be used for both situations for sure and I find a leveling advantage with dual wielding, but a 2 Handed weapon could also provide huge skill burst damage that could clear enemies rapidly as well.  Go with whatever weapons you can get that are better, but you should be getting the best weapons off the auction house every 5 levels, they are cheap.

* Which Follower Should I Use?

Depending on what your configuration is will depend on what follower you want to use.  The Templar is what is commonly used to get to 60 because it can heal, save your butt, and buff you.  The Templar is also a Melee combatant using swords so he’ll be up there distracting enemies as well for you.

The other two options are an Enchantress or a Scoundrel.

The Scoundrel is essentially a Demon Hunter using a Bow and can help keep enemies snared and away from you as well as providing buffs at the higher levels.

The Enchantress is like a Wizard and will use magic to charm, protect, and help you control enemies that will be using magic on you.

For leveling through Normal and possibly Nightmare, I found it didn’t really matter.  But whichever one you pick make sure you keep it equipped by pressing the “F” key or by clicking their icon in the top left.  Don’t be afraid to give them really good gear you can always get it back.  They can add as much as 10% of your damage or more as well as providing helpful tools to counter a lot of fights.  In the later levels if you plan to solo you might find yourself swapping them around.

* The Auction House

Every so many levels you should go to the auction house and buy the best primary and off-hand weapon you can for a good price off the auction house.  You don’t have to have a lot of money to get a really good weapon just make sure you use the maximum buyout filter when searching.  A single weapon can be the difference between whether or not you’re going to be able to get through certain areas and it will also save you a lot of time, so spend the gold on it.

* What Stats does my Monk Need?

Dexterity and Vitality.  Do not forget about Vitality as you will need it to survive later in the game.  After that I would grab anything that increases your life steal or health regen.

Dexterity will increase your damage but there are also stats that can directly increase your damage as well.

Keep in mind if you can, get a weapon with life steal on it and a belt.  It’s very vital to staying alive as a melee class.

* Which Passive Skills Keep you Alive?

Ranked in order of what I’ve found to be most important to least important, depending on your playstyle these could be a lot different for you.

  1. Near Death Experience (unlocked at level 58) – When receiving fata damage, you are instead to 35% of maximum life and 35% spirit
  2. Transcendence (unlocked at level 16) – Every point of spirit spent heals you
  3. The Guardian’s Path (unlocked at level 24) – Dual Wielding gives you 15% chance to dodge
  4. Resolve (unlocked at level 10) – Damage you deal reduces enemy damage by 25% for 2.5 seconds
  5. Seize the Initiative (unlocked at level 20) – Your Armor is increased by 100% of your Dexterity
  6. Pacifism (unlocked at level 30) – While under a stun, fear, or charm effect all damage taken is reduced by 75%
  7. One With Everything (unlocked at level 45) – Resistance to all elements is equivalent to your highest elemental resistance
  8. Sixth Sense – Your dodge chance is increased by an amount equal to 30% of your Critical Hit Chance

* Which Skills Will Heal Me?

  • Breath of Heaven – Rune of Circle of Life at level 22 will increase healing effects.
  • Serenity with Rune of Peaceful Repose at level 23 will heal you
  • Inner Sanctuary with Rune of Safe Haven at level 26 will regenerate life
  • Cyclone Strike with Rune of Soothing Breeze at level 55 will heal you
  • Mantra of Healing will regenerate life, Rune of Sustenance at level 31 increases the effect
  • Mantra of Conviction with Rune of Reclamation at level 55 has a 30% chance to heal you

* Act 1 Normal

- Levels 1-13

As always there’s not a whole lot going on in the first 13 levels of any class, you’re taking them for a spin and testing out the skills and playstyle.

So far everytime I got a new primary skill I’ve switched to it.  So I used Fists of Thunder, then at level 3, Deadly Reach, and at level 11, Crippling Wave, which I’m still currently using at 13.

Lashing Tail Kick seems to be the best and I’m using the Rune of Vulture Claw Kick, you get that at level 7.

I used Blinding Flash until I got Breath of Heaven.  Breath of Heaven is a skill I’ll probably have up for most of the game because it heals.

My 4th skill I had when I unlocked I used Dashing Strike, Tempest Rush, and Wave of Light.  I wasn’t really feeling any of them.  Tempest Rush was kind of neat but I switched to Exploding Palm at level 13 and that’s what I’m currently going to use to go into Act 2 with.

For my passive skills I had Resolve up and then switched to Exalted Soul at 13.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 1 Normal

++ The Skeleton King/Queen Araneae/The Warden Fights on Normal

There is nothing special about these fights, the hardest mechanic is the Skeleton King he’ll sync out into a transparent form and swing wildly at you which can cause damage, just get away from him.

++ The Butcher Fight on Normal

Leveling my third character to Inferno, I felt kind of bad for the Butcher this time, I don’t know that he hardly hit me the entire fight.  This is a mechanic fight.  Fire comes up from ground in the areas that turn red, he stomps his foot on the ground where he’s going to strike, and he throws a beem of light with knockback where he’s going to charge.  So get out of the way of those things and you’ll be pretty set.  Keep moving always!

* Act 2 Normal

- Levels 13-21

At level 15 I’m using: Way of a Hundred Fists, Lashing Tail Kick, Exploding Palm, Breath of Heaven, and Cyclone Strike.

You’ll pick up your 6th skill which is a Mantra.  I used both Matra of Evasion and Mantra of Retribution.  What you use depends on what you need for the fight.  Typically, Evasion can be better for boss fights while Retribution is better for just clearing and leveling.

My passive skills were switched to Transcendence and I don’t see myself getting rid of this one, however I picked up a 2nd slot at level 20.  I put in Seize the Initiative just for more survivability, but you can pick whatever you want.

Exploding Palm went away for Serenity at level 16.

At level 17 I put in Seven Sided Strike instead of Cyclone Strike.

I toyed with some of the other Primary attacks but I kept Way of a Hundred Fists.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 2 Normal

++ Zoltun Kulle/Maghda Fights on Normal

Zoltun Kulle: This seemed to be pretty easy, you can avoid the cyclones and fire if you’d like but with Serenity and Breath of Heaven I just stood in there and took the damage.

Maghda: You have to kill the enemies she spawns before her shield comes off and they die really quick.

++ Belial Fight on Normal

Same fight as always.  When he strikes the ground in a single spot you want to avoid it but you also want to avoid being between his two single strikes on the ground because he’ll launch a massive attack in the middle of those locations.  When he drops his fists into the ground you need to move as fast as you can through the explosions on the ground.  Remember you can take some of these hits but get your Serenity, Breath of Heaven, and Potions ready in case you get hit because it doesn’t take many to explode on you to kill you.

* Act 3 Normal

++ Levels 21-27

My skills, except for Mantra, don’t change through this act, except I try out the different Runes for the skills as I get them: Serenity, Breath of Heaven, Seven Sided Strike, Mantra of Healing (at level 26) otherwise Mantra of Retribution/Evasion I used, Way of a Hundred Fists, and Lashing Tail Kick.

Passive Skills: Transcendence and Seize the Initiative

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 3 Normal

++ Ghom/Siegebreaker Assault Beast/Cydaea Fights on Normal

Ghom: I just stood in his poison cloud and used my skills to stay up but because I had life steal on each weapon and I think each weapon even had +life per hit, he wasn’t able to even do enough damage to me to really drop my health.

Siegebreaker Assault Beast: Somehow for part of the fight I got underneath him so he couldn’t hit me with his swinging attacks, but for the most part I stood face to face with him and ran behind when feasible while using my healing skills to stay alive.

Cydaea: I ignored the adds and just focused on her and she died really fast without much effort.

++ Azmodan Fight on Normal

The entire actual fight time in this video is 70 seconds.  Watch out for his fireballs where they hit and I avoided his black growing stuff on the ground, but I think with my skills and life leach I might have been able to sit in there and take the damage and finish the fight faster.  Otherwise, kill his portals when he summons them and avoid the fire balls.

* Act 4 Normal

++ Levels 27-29

I ended up beating Normal Mode in 4 hours and 44 minutes total time you can see that in the end of the Diablo fight video.  The monk is by far the quickest and most destructive class I’ve seen yet.  It’s probably why it’s the most popular class.

All my skills are exactly the same as act 3 unless I swapped runes besides my mantras.  I used Mantra of Healing but then decided I had enough survivability so I used Manta of Retribution instead, even on the Diablo fight.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 4 Normal

++ Iskatu/Rakanoth/Izual Fights on Normal

These I combined all into one video and the total length is 2 minutes and 9 seconds, but the actual fight time is probably around 1 minute and 30 seconds for all three, that’s how fast these die to the monk.

Iskatu: Way of a Hundred Fists pretty much takes care of adds, use your healing skills to stay alive and just beat him down.

Rakanoth: Simple stand and fight.

Izual: I saved Serenity for the ice orbs to avoid the damage, other than that you just stand there and beat the crap out of him.

++ Diablo Fight on Normal

The entire length of the actual fighting was under 3 minutes.  I avoided all of the cages on the ground and didn’t have to use a healing well or a potion.  I also avoided the fire on the ground but toward the end I just used Serenity and Breath of Heaven and stood in it while hitting him.  You may still want to avoid his electric breath he shoots out by running in a circle around him so it doesn’t hit you.

I beat Diablo on Normal and the entire game in 4 hours and 44 minutes if you stay till end of video I show you my profile.  I have no idea if that’s good but seems pretty quick for soloing.

* Act 1 Nightmare

- Levels 29-35

Because of how fast I’m moving through the content I’m not spending enough time leveling or farming so I’m always short on levels which makes the game typically harder on the player, but I’m using the Auction House every 5 levels or so to buy some of the better gear, especially weapons.  I’m setting my max buyout filter to 5000 per piece of gear right now and 10000 per weapon.  It’s still relatively cheap to gear your character up in the auction house.  As I progress through the acts and I start to either die a lot or kill slow, that’s a great indicator you’re way undergeared and it’s time to hit up the auction house.

Starting off pretty early in Act 1 I’m using Mystic Ally, with Rune of Water Ally, then Rune of Fire Ally at 31.  I have up Breath of Heaven, Seven Sided Strike, Mantra of Conviction, Way of a Hundred Fists, and Lashing Tail Kick.

My passive skills have not changed, although for the third spot at level 30 I added Fleet Footed.  All this helps me to do is get away from enemies I don’t want to fight and progress through the game faster.  It helped me survive a few tough fights by out running enemies, otherwise, you’ll want to pick something other than this depending on what you’re trying to accomplish.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 1 Nightmare

++ The Skeleton King/Queen Araneae/The Warden Fights on Nightmare

The Skeleton King: Kill adds, when he goes invisible and starts attacking you can use Seven Sided Strike to avoid it and do damage.

Queen Araneae:  Same deal, attack her, kill adds, use Seven Sided Strike when up, this fight is a joke

The Warden: As always this is hardly a real fight but I like to include it for fun.  I also want to point out my Breath of Heaven has Rune of Blazing Wrath (level 32) which gives me a 15% damage buff for 45 seconds so I use it when I don’t even need a heal usually at the start of all fights and keep it up throughout.

++ The Butcher Fight on Nightmare

Same skills still, avoid fire on ground, use healing well if you need it, avoid his strikes and his charge.

* Act 2 Nigthmare

- Levels 35-40

I have the exact same skills as Act 1.  I made a change around level 39 and removed Seven Sided Strike and replaced it with Sweeping Wind with Rune of Firestorm (level 38).  I ended up putting Seven Sided Strike back in and dropping Lashing Tail Kick for Sweeping Wind with Rune of Bladestorm, as Lashing Tail Kick had just lost most of it’s usability at this point in the game with the available Runes.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 2 Nightmare

++ Zoltun Kulle/Maghda Fights on Nightmare

Maghda:  This fight is still a joke, kill adds, kill her

Zoltun Kulle: Kite his guardians around the circle if you can’t face them heads on, it can be a devastating start till the guardians are gone.  After that you just need to avoid cyclones and rocks falling on your head.

++ Belial Fight on Nightmare

Strictly a game mechanics fight, if you can play the mechanics you can beat Belial.  Stay out of explosive stuff on ground when he plants fists in, use cooldowns / potions if you need to to stay alive during it.  Don’t stand in between where he strikes the ground because he does a mega strike in the centerish of those locations.  Other than that, as long as you can kill his adds in the add phase at the start you’re set.

* Act 3 Nightmare

- Levels 40-46

No changes here until about 43 when I switched from Mantra of Conviction to Mantra of Healing.   The reason for this is because I had not gone to the auction house or got enough significant upgrades and the enemies were becoming too high level for me so I was taking a beating.  I needed more survivability.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 3 Nightmare

++ Ghom/Siegebreaker Assault Beast/Cydaea Fights on Nightmare

Ghom: This time around I had to move out of his poison cloud for a bit but otherwise I was almost able to just stand there and heal myself while fighting him without moving.

Siegebreaker Assault Beast: I used seven sided strike when up to avoid his attacks but otherwise I was able to stand toe to toe and take his attacks head on without him killing me.  This is where lifesteal and life per hit items come in handy plus your heals and life regen abilities.

Cydaea: I still don’t understand some of these boss fights are stupid easy without trying yet the elite packs you run into are really challenging.  There’s nothing special on this fight.  My Sweeping Wind more than takes care of the adds.

++ Azmodan Fight on Nightmare

I decided to get ballsy and just stand in his “dark power of hell” spots on ground but I got scared and ran out eventually.  I even took a fireball hit and bodies on the head, he’s not as strong as he is when you get to Hell yet, should be fairly simple fight.

* Act 4 Nightmare

- Levels 46-50

As usual I finished Nightmare kind of early at level 48 so I’ll have to go back and repeat some quests until I’m 50 and can advance to Hell.  But I killed Diablo on Nightmare and only had 9 hours and 58 minutes logged on my character while casually playing solo without any outside help.  Watch the end of the Diablo video where I log off and show you my profile time.

No changes in skills again!  Pretty simple guide hey?

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 4 Nightmare

++ Iskatu/Rakanoth/Izual Fights on Nightmare

Iskatu: Sweeping Winds destroys adds, don’t move and stand on Iskatu and kill him, use your Breath of Heaven and potions to keep yourself up, if you can’t stay alive, time to go to the auction house or use Serenity in place of another skill.

Rakanoth: Stand and fight again.

Izual: Stay away from his orbs if possible, you can time Seven Sided Strike to avoid them if you use it right before they explode.  Let Tyrael take the adds or keep them away while you fight Izual.

++ Diablo Fight on Nightmare

Avoid cages on ground, avoid lightning breath, stay out of fire circle on ground.  Beat him down, save potions and cooldowns in hell for your clone incase you have problems with it.  And that’s it.  Use healing wells if you need.

I beat Diablo on Nightmare on level 48 and my entire time played on the monk was 9 hours and 58 minutes at this point.  Of course to go to hell I have to go back and get two more levels otherwise I would have made it to Hell solo in under 10 hours.

*  Act 1 Hell

- Levels 50-53

The major changes here are that I got rid of Seven Sided Strike and put in Serenity instead.  The extra survivability helped me advance quickly through Act 1.  Serenity makes its place into my skill set permanently for the rest of the game.

I also made Mantra of Healing with Rune of Heavenly Body a permanent change in my skill set for my mantra.  This too helped me stay alive.

Mystic Ally I switched to Earth Ally permanently for rest of the game too.  The Mantra of Healing with Rune of Heavenly Body and Earth Ally increased my hitpoints substantially making it easier to survive.

My passive skills at level 53 are Transcendence, The Guardian’s Path, and Combination Strike.  Everytime I get a new Rune for a skill I try it out and this is what I ended up with, not much of a change.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 1 Hell

++ The Skeleton King/Queen Araneae/The Warden Fights on Hell

The Skeleton King: This seemed to be easier than the other two times I fought him, with all my healing and survival skills I was able to just stand and fight him without moving too much.  Sweeping Winds handled the adds.

Queen Araneae:  She’s still a joke.  You just follow her around and hit her until her adds spawn then kill the adds and fight her again.

The Warden: Ran into a rare pack on the way to fight The Warden and I also put him at the beginning of the video.  This fight is stand and fight really, he does jailing but you can remove it with Serenity.

++ The Butcher Fight on Hell

Same skills still, avoid fire on ground, use healing well if you need it, avoid his strikes and his charge.  Be aware of his Hammer Smash, he’ll jump twice before he does it, just move out of the front of him where it will hit, this may cause you some difficulties if you aren’t geared and skilled for the survival I have.

*  Act 2 Hell

- Levels 53-56

No skill changes here.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 2 Hell

++ Zoltun Kulle/Maghda Fights on Hell

Maghda:  This fight is still a joke, kill adds, kill her

Zoltun Kulle: Kite his guardians around the circle if you can’t face them heads on, it can be a devastating start till the guardians are gone.  After that you just need to avoid cyclones and rocks falling on your head.

++ Belial Fight on Hell

* Act 3 Hell

- Levels 56-58

There are passive skill changes here.  At level 58 I put in Near Death Experience because things were starting to get really tough, even though my Monk had over 55,000 hp with the Mystic Ally and Mantra I was still getting beat down pretty severely.  I also swapped in Resolve which reduces enemy damage by 25% anytime you deal damage to them.  This helped tremendously as well.  These next two acts were all about surviving not damage.  I upgraded my weapons as far as I could to increase my damage.   The passive skill I kept was Transcendence which has been helping me stay alive since I got it at level 16.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 3 Hell

++ Ghom/Siegebreaker Assault Beast/Cydaea Fights on Hell

Ghom: This time around I had to move out of his poison cloud for a bit but otherwise I was almost able to just stand there and heal myself while fighting him without moving.

Siegebreaker Assault Beast: Stood toe to toe with him.  He was easier than when I fought him on Nightmare, probably because I have more survivability skills up now.

++ Azmodan Fight on Hell

Just like Nightmare I wasn’t able to stand in the power of hell dark spots on the ground very long so I ran away from those.  The fireball hits I had enough hitpoints to take everyone of.  I recommend you still move away from these and keep with the mechanics unless you know what you’re doing.

* Act 4 Hell

- Levels 58-60

I beat Diablo on level 59 with 18 hours and 38 minutes total time played, but I’ll need to go back in and do a few repeat quests to get 60 to advance to Inferno.  Even with that, I should be in Inferno in under 19 hours total played time from soloing without any outside help.

There are no skill changes at all for this.  I’m still surviving my way.  You may notice on my way to Diablo at level 59 my character information sheet says I do 7600 and some damage.  Some people at level 59 are twice that and they are still in Act 2 or need help to get through stuff.  I’m telling you the key to this game is to survive.  Think of Diablo 3 like World of Warcraft except you need to be the tank and do damage, if you equip your Monk straight Dexterity and Damage then you need a Tank, if you go straight Tank, then you need damage, so balance those two out where you’re comfortable and just beat the game.

++ Random Monk Gameplay from Act 4 Hell

++ Iskatu/Rakanoth/Izual Fights on Hell

Iskatu: Sweeping Winds destroys adds, don’t move and stand on Iskatu and kill him, use your Breath of Heaven, Serenity, and potions to keep yourself up, if you can’t stay alive, time to go to the auction house and upgrade to Vitality and life gear.  Don’t forget if you have the spirit you can spam your Mantra of Healing, the first 3 seconds give you 4x the amount of life regeneration so if you can keep it up with your spirit, just spam it.  You’ll notice I died on Iskatu (we died at same time), this was because I wasn’t able to move toward him and he got out of my range, that’s why it’s important to be close to him.

Rakanoth: Stand and fight again.

Izual: Stay away from his orbs if possible, you can use Serenity when they are about to blow and not even have to move.  I’d still leave the adds up by Tyrael and run off to fight Izual alone.

++ Diablo Fight on Hell

Avoid cages on ground, avoid lightning breath, stay out of fire circle on ground.  Beat him down, save potions and cooldowns in hell for your clone incase you have problems with it.  And that’s it.  Use healing wells if you need.
