Paladin Tanking Builds Patch 3.3

If you are low on gold or struggling to get by with enough gold take a look at this Gold Guide for some of the best gold making information out there.

There's essentially two things you want to know when choosing the talent builds that best suits your play style as a tank for a Paladin. That's whether or not you're going to be AoE Intensive Tank, a Raid Boss Tank, or perhaps a mixture of both. Regardless of what your passion is, you're going to be spending most of your points in the protection tree.

Paladin AoE Tanking Build

There a few tweeks that can be done to this build. First off, you can remove three points from Crusade/Sanctity of Battle and put them into the protection field for Improved Devotion Aura if you need the extra healing and armor, it really depends on what you are tanking and how well geared you are. Since we are focusing on AoE abilities we went as far into the Retribution tree as possible to improve our crits and damage.

We also are able to swap in glyph alternatives, currently this build uses Hammer of the Righteousness which allows you to hit an additional target, Seal of Command which allows you to gain mana when you cast judgement with it active, and Righteous Defense to ensure your AoE Taunt works as often as possible. The alternatives are Holy Wrath (if you're fighting a lot of undead/demons), Spiritual Attunement (for more mana), or Consecration ( so it lasts longer)

Before you do anything make sure you have Retribution Aura up, Righteous Fury, and Holy Shield active (keep holy shield up in your rotation as soon as it's available or wears off). Then the strategy here is to lead with an Avenger's Shield, then drop Consecration when the mobs are on you, follow up with Hammer of Righteousness. Make sure you are using seal of command as it will do extra holy damage to up to two additional targets. Shield of Righteousness is next that will allow you to keep some single target threat, and ensure Sacred Shield is up to help you absorb some damage.

Paladin Single Target / Raid Tanking

There are more tweeks that can be done to this build. You'll see we've put 5 points into holy for increased damage from Seal of Vengeance and Righteousness, this helps for single target tanking big time. We've also piled in some Improved Devotion Aura and Guarded by the Light to reduce spell damage. And we are using Heart of the Crusader to increase damage again. Now you can easily remove 3 points from Heart of the Crusader and put it anywhere into the protection tree if you want.

For Glyphs we have Avenger's Shield which increases the damage it does by 100% but only allows it to hit one target, Seal of Vengeance Which increases your expertise if you need it, and Judgement which increases the damage done by judgements. There are a few alternatives, Divine Plea (For extra damage reduction while active), Righteous Defense (make sure your aoe taunt works as much as possible), Seal of Righteousness (Increased damage by this for single target tanking, you can stack 5 stacks of Seal of Vengeance and then switch to this and back again to refresh), and Spiritual Attunement for more mana.

So make sure Devotion Aura is up, Righteous Fury, and Holy Shield. Keep Holy Shield up as much as possible. Start off with Avenger's Shield on pull, drop Consecration for extra threat, Stack 5 stacks of Seal of Vengeance, continuously Judge Light or Mana on target, switch to Seal of Righteousness when you have 5 stacks of vengeance up and switch back to vengeance again before it wears off, make sure you use Hammer of the Righteousness and Shield of Righteousness when available. Keep Scared Shield up to help you tank.
