Blizzard unveiled Diablo III, full with gameplay videos and class descriptions. D3 promises to be the definitive action role-playing game. It will basically be Diablo II using new technology to make the characters actually visible, Sean Connery will be featured as Deckard Cain and Witch Doctors will take the stage along with Barbarians and 3 unannounced character classes.
But don't get too excited. Statistically speaking, not all of us will still be alive when Diablo III finally hits shelves. Before then we'll likely see 38 new moons, 2 WoW expansions and Starcraft II, considering Blizzard's delivery history, averaging upwards of 3 years from game announcement to release. Get prepared for years and years of hype! Don't forget about Warcraft III's '99 announcement predicting a late '00 release (it hit shelves June 2002). World of Warcraft, announced in 2001 took over 3 years to hit shelves. Warcraft III shipped with propoganda promising, 'World of Warcraft: The portal opens 2003...'
All pessimism aside, we can expect a mid 2011 release for Diablo III and 2010 release for Starcraft if Blizzard can keep up with their aggressive release schedules. Let's just hope they beat the world's end coming in 2012.
Here's the obligatory feature list straight from Blizzard:
Features:
* Five powerful character classes to choose from, including the barbarian and witch doctor
* Brand-new 3D graphics engine enhanced with spectacular visual effects and Havok physics
* Numerous indoor and outdoor areas detailing new regions in the world of Sanctuary
* Interactive environments with dangerous traps and obstacles, and destructible elements
* Randomly generated worlds bolstered by scripted events for endless and dynamic gameplay
* Vast assortment of fiendish monsters, with unique attack patterns and behaviors
* New quest system and character-customization options for the ultimate action RPG experience
* Multiplayer functionality over Battle.net with support for cooperative and competitive play

Awesome. I can wait til 2012
Awesome. I can wait til 2012 if its going to be as good as they are predicting. Even if all we get is better graphics and some player customization, I'd still play the game. I might as well play D3 if I am still playing D2 7 years later.

I honestly think that when
I honestly think that when Nostradamus predicted the end of the world in 2012 by a comet sized planet destroying the earth that he was actually referring to the release of Diablo 3. It will hit the earth with such explosive and fiery force that I can see why they got the two confused.
