Shaman Talent Guide

The Shaman is an interesting class. Specializing in buffs via totems, both to themselves and their allies, they are a great asset to any group and are formidable opponents by themselves. The Shaman has three primary choices when it comes to talents: Spell DPS, Melee DPS, and Healing, and they are more than competent at any of these three jobs, whichever is chosen.
Elemental - 41/0/20
Elemental is the Shaman Spell DPS tree. With the proper shaman gear, the shaman can dish out some serious damage with your Lightning and Shock spells. This shaman tree is also fairly simple as far as choosing what to get: The entire second tier of talents is relatively sub par; Improved Fire Nova's effect is too minimal; Elemental Devastation attempts a hybrid spell caster/melee tactic that gear simply makes unrealistic; Unrelenting Storm is a decent talent, but is surrounded by better; Elemental Shields is detrimental to Eye of the Storm's effect. The points left over find happy homes in Restoration to aid your survivability, and in the case of Tidal Mastery even adds to your DPS. It may be worth considering exchanging Totem of Wrath for Nature's Swiftness, depending on which you feel you could use more.
Enhancement - 0/43/18 or 0/48/13 or 20/41/0
Enhancement focuses on Shaman Melee DPS. Better for sustained DPS and without the mana problems of Elemental, Enhancement is usually the choice for PvE, whereas Elemental is more effective in PvP. Still, geared and played well, both are viable for either situation. Enhancement is much the same as Elemental in the sense that the talents not worth taking are, for the most part, fairly obvious, either by their own merit (or lack thereof) or the presence of stronger talents around them. As with Elemental, the rest of the points are put into Restoration to aid in healing, if only yourself. Overall another strong talent tree, and choosing this or Elemental comes down largely to preference.
Restoration - 0/5/56
No one would be surprised to hear that Resto, as a healing tree, is the preferred tree for groups and raids, which usually require healers more than anything else. What may surprise you, however, is the PvP viability of Resto: while the shaman won't be doing much damage, you'll have a ton of survivability and can wear your opponent down. In this build, I focused primarily on PvE healing. While Improved Reincarnation's usage is limited and you may not want to take that talent regardless, if you plan to PvP as a Resto shaman, it may do you good to take three points out of Healing Grace and two from Tidal Focus to pick up Focused Mind and max out Nature's Guardian.
Enhancement/Resto Hybrid - 0/38/23
If you find yourself being expected to heal often enough to invest some points in the Resto tree but not enough to go full Resto, and are willing to live with slightly reduced DPS effectiveness, this build may strike a balance that works for you. Going down far enough in Resto to pick up Nature's Swiftness gives you a solid foundation for healing when you need to. It isn't quite enough for main healing difficult things, such as raids or Heroic instances, but if you have enough gear it should be enough. The loss of Shamanistic Rage and Unleashed Rage damages your effectiveness DPSing in a group, but if you need the healing talents, you probably weren't DPSing much in a group anyway. Worth a try if respec costs are getting to you.

Elemental = pvp spec?
Elemental = pvp spec? Anymore we are the first ones targeted and most elemental gear makes you a very big glass cannon expaclly with only 2 ways to slow people down (Earth bind and Frost Shock) Yeah the dmg is great but not the best for pvp. Enhancment is the Pvp Spec also you missed a really good spec of Enhance Elemental.

Is a very good spec alot of people overlook
wow.... how long have you
wow.... how long have you played a shaman? 3 months?
If anyone reads this.. disregaurd the talent trees. First off.. the enhance-resto tree is retarded.. If I catch you with this spec I will camp your corpse for 2 months.. and never let you forget it. The original poster's comment about "if you're needed for healing you probably aren't doing that much dps" is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Enhance shamans are undisputably the best mele dps class in the game. Not only will they top off the dmg meters in any raid.. they will buff the heck out of any hunters, rogues, warriors, or feral druids--via grace of air totem, strength of earth totem, and unleashed rage. The best raiding enhancement spec is http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-talents.xml?r=Kilrogg&n=Benz... with that said.
The comment about Elemental Devestation is the most ignorant I have heard. A shock crit (enhance shamans shock more than elemental) that increases your mele crit % by 9%.... hello people... that is wicked.. an enhance mele crit procs all their buffs. this spec is great for pvp or raiding if you want to go for maximum dps if you have enough +hit gear to be able to sacrifice the resto tree's 3% chance to hit. http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/shaman/talents.html?05023050...
The Fire totems save your rear constantly.. and having a nova totem blow up after only 2 sec with 15% more dmg caused by it--is incredible. Enhance shamans should be dropping fire totems when there are more than 1 mob being tanked so long as the nova or magma do not get in the way of crowd control they will increase your dmg greatly.
And finally... for the ignorance concerning the resto tree... pvp viability..... don't kid yourself. Yes resto shamans have earth shield... and every other class in the game has a way to remove it. I resto shamans are a free kill for my enhance shaman, because a purge with fast attacks, and earthshocks to interupt heals, make them easy kills. any rogue can pwn a resto sham, a warlock, mage, ms warrior (roflstomp at pvp fury warriors) you name it.. they can all smoke resto shamies down and the only thing a resto shaman can do is spam heal themself untill their last lesser healing wave gets interupted or silenced and they die. there is no closing the gap as a resto shaman... sure you have a grounding totem to drop when you cast a heal.. and an ice lance / counterspell kills that idea and locks you out of a heal for 8 seconds. pyro takes 6 seconds = dead shamy. I don't need to discuss this any further... resto shamans are nice, great for raiding... but they are at a disadvantage compared to other healing classes when it comes to pvp.
Oh yeah... if you are amore than 12 points in resto.. no matter what spec you are.. you should have imp reincarn... unlike what this retard is telling you.. he obviously never raids. If you die healing a boss fight, your tank will probably die.. then your raid wipes.... it would suck if you looked at your cooldown for reincarnation and it said 10 minutes remaining... if you had improved reincarnation you would have been able to pop up and keep healing the tank (do not pop up during flame wreath noob) and maybe get some phat loot.
Finally as for pvp for all shamans: If you are doing battlegrounds... your spec, talents, etc.. don't matter. BG's are like 5 man instances-- a prelude to get ready for something better. If you are going to the arena here is one bit of advice (statistics back this up more than words) If you are a shaman of any spec your best bet is to do a 5v5 (more points anyways) in a 5v5 you should have more room to work, and be more usefull with your totems. Shamans are cursed at the moment with the lack of survivability and the ability to close the gap, or create one. Earthbind has 5 health.. and the slowing debuff can be dispelled. Frost shock doesn't have enough range to be that effective. There is no fear, to get an attacker off of you, there is no bubble to stop dmg, there is no "quick" way out (sprint, blink, stun, charge/intervene/intercept) so if you are in a 2v2 or 3v3 you have to go all out dps untill you die (or spam heal yourself untill you die =resto solution--btw your dps partner just got killed while you were spam healing yourself)... and there is no way to prevent your attackers from attacking you, so you will be the first target and the first one dead.
Until Blizzard fixes shamans it would be best to stick with a 5v5
OK I'll stop for now..ps.. never come to this site again these guys are retarded

On the enhancement tree, it maxes out Flurry and includes Storm Strike and Dual Wield, also maxing out Mental Quickness which "increases spell damage AND HEALING by an amount equal to 30% of your attack power", making some of that attack-power/enhancement focused gear improve your heals. Also, there's two points in Guardian Totems, which I like as it makes your Grounding Totems much more effective. On the resto side, you have faster healing waves (Improved Healing Wave), Healing Focus (70% chance to avoid interruption while casting healing spells), Restorative Totems (makes your mana spring and healing stream totems actually useful; casters will appreciate the mana spring in instances), Ancestral Healing (helping out the tanks in instances), and Nature's Swiftness (great for PVP and instances). I didn't waste any points on Improved Ghost Wolf or Nature's Guidance (3%? come on...). I put 2 points in Improved Reincarnation, which is better insurance against a wipe in an instance, and good for PVP as well.
This spec makes you a force to be reckoned with in PVP, and also a very viable healer in groups. =D
dude you are full of #%!#$ on
dude you are full of #%!#$ on resto not being awesome in pvp alot better then enhancment anyway lol the only thing you can really kill as an enhancment is us and then you get pwned by every other type of melee restos on the other hand have an easy time with any other type of dps if you think they dont then you jsut are thinking enough... you basically have a wall against any type of melee (this is made by your 10k armor and earth shield) and 2 to 4 different means of spell interuption at any time depending on race and profession not to mention that your earth shock hit for 900-1400 then there are all those wonderful totems lol over all resto is pretty much op i mean they wont get you the fast kill but they are way more survivable then an enhancment shaman
My god you sound like one of
My god you sound like one of those whiney lots in the BG. /cry cry cry . What a jerk.
Hate to sound like a 'noob'
Hate to sound like a 'noob' and all, but haven't read these posts before. Not really understanding all the different acronyms thrown around. What does the following mean:
pwn or pwned?
op?
pwned is short for powned
pwned is short for powned which basically means owned with just a p infront of it for a bigger e-penis. op means overpowered.
Actually the p is for
Actually the p is for permanent, as in "You have been permanently owned." But I digress.....
Also, for the guy who posted 4 posts up from here, don't call anyone full of #%!#$ or tell them they are stupid when you can't even use punctuation in your posts. I quit reading what you had to say because your run on, single sentence paragraph sounded more like a 12 year old girl with ADHD then someone who knows anything about gaming.
I disagree with that comment
I disagree with that comment about resto shamans not being able to survive in pvp. I personally have a full 61 pts specced resto shaman and i dominate in pvp. If i have a rougue attack me for example i simply use a combination of earthbind, watershield, and fire ele and kill him. As for the 3V3 arena, i have a team with a rougue and a mage and we do just fine. I use my earthbind or tremor totem, while the mage sheeps and rougue does mad damage, any aggro on me gets sheeped by the mage or ganked by the rougue...and yes i do get hit and have to heal myself, but while ppl are attacking me (epicd out) and attempting to kill me, the rougue and mage kill them. So its all in knowing how to play your character.
Actually Pwned was a typo
Actually Pwned was a typo from someone who meant to type 'Owned' but as the P is next to the O on the keyboard he accidently typed Pwned & it kinda stuck >.<
Okay so I'm making a
Okay so I'm making a shaman..and I like to melee and I like to heal. You guys fight a lot so I'm confused what I should do. Maybe i'm just too much a dumb girl to decide for myself idk. lol. But yeah so if you guys can help me out..without confusing me..that'd be super sweet. Thankies^.^

Jess, Elemental is a ranged
Jess,
Elemental is a ranged attack so I would not recommend it. Enhancement with Resto added later, is the way to go if you want to melee and heal. Also, checkout

for everything you need to know about that spec or any other toon.
Any toon you build is really just a factor of how well you can play it.

This post is pretty
This post is pretty bad.....misses the main points of Enh...
I've played Enh shaman for 3yrs pvp and pve....currently on Muru in SW (Cleared everything esle)...so i know some stuff about enh....
First thing....You are there to buff melee...primalrily rogues and warriors with Imp WF totem and Shamanistic rage and Str totem.
Do not expect to top DPS in 25 mans...locks and rogues always win that....that said u can still acheive 1800+dps with decent gear....2000+ on bosses like Teron....locks and rogues can get 2400+...theyre out and out DPS classes...we are buff class.
Secondly, go for the same spec PvE and PvP....0/47/14....take imp totems, natures guidance in resto...the 30yd range helps alot and +3% hit from an additional talent (with +6% in DW Enh tree) is just amazing...means u do not have to stack +hit items and can go for AP/Crit.....aim for 1600+ AP and 30+% crit to dps effectively. Also, if u can get it, get Expertise as the primary loss of DPS for enh is dodged attacks (Exp decreses this rate and gives u + hit). The trinkets from MgT Heroic and Gruul (Dragonspine Trophy) are best in game atm for enh as these 2 scale amazingly well with ur gear (the better ur gear, the more benefit u will get from these trinkets).
DO NOT put any talent points in Ele as this is a waste...it worked Pre-TBC ok....i ran similar spec in BGs....but in TBC the mechanics changed so much that this is no longer viable. (we do not crit shox at all really...maybe 5% crit chance...so once every 3minutes u might crit a shock....not worth it). 90+% of ur damage with be from mele...about 70% from white hits, 25% from WF and Stromstrike, 5% from Shox. Therefore, use ur talent points to maximise ur melee dps.
Hope this helps
